New Milford Hospital's New Healing Garden's Focal Point Is Sculpture By Joe Gitterman
NEW MILFORD, CT , May 19, 2015 (Newswire.com) - “The Healing Knot” by Joe Gitterman was selected as the centerpiece for the Healing Garden that is an extension of New Milford Hospital’s new Arnhold Emergency Department. Litchfield County sculptor Joe Gitterman’s dramatic work was a gift to the hospital from the Lawrence J. and Natalie D. Portell Foundation, Inc.
More than 20,000 patients are expected to be treated each year at the 11,000-square-foot state-of-the-art addition to New Milford Hospital, which is affiliated with the Western Connecticut Health Network.
Gitterman’s work was picked as the focal point of the Healing Garden by Chief Development Officer Grace Linhard and Development Officer James Clark.
They sought a local sculptor whose work resonated with the garden’s mission as a place of tranquility, solace, calm and strength during a stressful time.
“The Healing Knot serves as a visual metaphor for the garden, which is a sanctuary for family and friends. The sculpture’s looping and interlacing ribbons invite contemplation on the nature of relationship and the spirit of hope,” said Mr. Clark.
The serenity of the circle is captured by the sculpture, which is 3’ x 3’ and made of burnished stainless steel and mounted on a four-foot high Roxbury granite pedestal chosen by landscaper Eugene Reelick of Hollandia Nursery in Bethel. Reelick and Gitterman positioned the work of art so that it can be viewed easily and naturally in the garden itself as well as from the large, two story windows in the waiting room of the Emergency Department.
“I am thrilled to have been chosen to do a sculpture for this marvelous addition to our local hospital and hope that it helps make the time spent here more peaceful,” said Gitterman.
