Just in time for chilly fall nights and wolves howling at the moon, Davonna Juroe's break-through young adult paranormal, Scarlette, answers the intriguing question: What if 'Little Red Riding Hood' was real?

Based on both the Grimm and Perrault versions of Little Red Riding Hood and set against the terrifying, historic Beast of Gevaudan attacks, this dark YA fairy tale retelling blends two epic legends, giving the fabled girl-in-the-red-cloak a new, shockingly real existence.

Juroe says, "I love fairy tales; to the point that when I was little, I wished somehow they could've been real. What I didn't realize was that this whimsy childhood desire would become the driving force behind the novel's vision. As I started reading different versions of the tale, I found that Ms. Hood actually had a very rich history, indeed. Surprisingly, I found a French version entitled The Grandmother where the wolf in the story was really a werewolf. I then hoped to find a historical event that would amalgamate a real werewolf with the fairy tale.

"Lo and behold, after doing some historical research, I stumbled upon one of the most famous and mysterious alleged werewolves in history. Some sixty years after French author and aristocrat Charles Perrault penned his rendition of Little Red Riding Hood in 1697, nearly one hundred people were ferociously mauled by an unidentified wolf-like creature in the Gevaudan province of France. Rumors blended with superstition, and the terrified peasantry blamed the attacks on a werewolf, and this creature was given the name: The Beast of Gevaudan. I knew then I had my werewolf, and the rest, as they say, is fairy tale history."

Addressing this historical angle in Scarlette, Dr. Hannah Priest, University of Manchester, England says, "While retellings of fairy tales (including Little Red Riding Hood) are big box-office business at the moment, I was intrigued by Juroe's project, and the influence of French 'werewolf' history on her work."

Additionally, historian and children's middle grade author, Dr. John Bladek says, "Scarlette is [a] terrific horror/romance that rises to the top of recent fairy tale retellings. Unlike most books of this genre, the story is set in a real place and time and melds the supernatural with the historic in an entirely believable way."

Now an Amazon Hot New Release, Scarlette is available exclusively through Amazon's Kindle Store for eReaders everywhere--just in time for All Hallows' Eve.
