New Sleep Apnea Treatment Available at Grove Dental in Wyomissing, PA

Oral Appliance is Simple to Fit and Use, Replaces Cumbersome CPAPs

Grove Dental Offers New Service

Grove Dental Group in Wyomissing, PA will offer an alternative to sufferers of sleep apnea and snorers of the Berks County area this November. This innovative solution is a dental appliance, much like a sports protective mouthpiece, designed to move the jaw into a better breathing position at night. It’s a proven, non-mechanical, non-surgical approach to sleep apnea for those that snore while sleeping. Potential users can begin scheduling appointments on November 1, 2016.

Sleep apnea is a dangerous condition that affects some 18 million Americans. It often causes snoring, affecting some 40% of us. The affliction limits the body's ability to get a steady flow of oxygen through the airways, including the nose, mouth, throat, and windpipe. When someone has sleep apnea, their brain will recognize this lack of oxygen and send signals to the body to correct it. This often causes gasping and interruptions of sleep, or worse. These interruptions have been known to last from just a few seconds to minutes and can happen up to 100 times per hour.

Oral appliances are a dental treatment for a medical diagnosis. It's a great alternative to CPAPs that tend to be bulky, uncomfortable, and noisy. We are thrilled to be able to provide this new service for our patients.

Dr. Amanda Sonntag, DDS, Dentist

According to Grove Dental Group's Dr. Amanda Sonntag, who is the head of this new service, "Oral appliances are a dental treatment for a medical diagnosis. It's a great alternative to CPAPs that tend to be bulky, uncomfortable, and noisy. We are thrilled to be able to provide this new service for our patients.”

Until recently, the best solution for the condition was surgery or using cumbersome and unattractive CPAP machines. These devices include a mask that is placed over the nose and mouth area each evening to improve the flow of air to the body. While effective, there are generally problems associated with CPAP devices including leaky masks, uncomfortable sleeping conditions and dry mouths and nasal passages. Because of these issues, many CPAP owners simply decide not to use them.

While there are no age limits for the device, children who are experiencing sleep apnea will likely be referred to a pediatrician.
