New Theatre Takes Center Stage at the Old Globe

DPR Completes Construction of New Conrad Prebys Theatre Center in Balboa Park

DPR Construction (DPR) recently completed new additions to The Old Globe including a theater and education center, as well as an outdoor restaurant and plaza. DPR broke ground on the $22 million Conrad Prebys Theatre Center in June 2008.

The centerpiece of the new Conrad Prebys Theatre Center is the 30,000 square-foot modern Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, which seats 250 guests in-the-round and replaces the Cassius Carter Centre Stage. The exterior façade of the White Theatre follows the same Elizabethan architectural style of The Old Globe's main stage and outdoor Lowell Davies Festival Theatre.

"DPR was proud to be a part of The Old Globe project because it is one of San Diego's most celebrated landmarks," said Project Manager Ross Brown of DPR San Diego. "The new center will create a better experience for theater guests and provide The Old Globe's staff with much needed training facilities. We believe The Old Globe's patrons will appreciate the classics and new works in the beautiful, high-tech space."

The intimate theater, with no seats further than 12 feet from the stage, features a fully-trapped stage, two stage-level entrances, state-of-the-art acoustics and plush seating. The facility also includes dressing rooms and a green room for The Old Globe's three theaters, below ground support space and a renovated lobby area.

Additionally, the new Conrad Prebys Theatre Center features a 6,200 square-foot community education center, a 2,000 square-foot multipurpose facility for classes, rehearsals and lectures, a newly designed pub and dining pavilion. Improvements were also made to the 14,000 square-foot Copley Plaza.

The grand opening of the Conrad Prebys Theatre Center took place in Dec. 2009. The Old Globe will celebrate its 75th anniversary in June 2010.
