New Version of SyncPlus Redact Can Now Block Classified Message Content

SyncPlus Redact, a content filter for Exchange ActiveSync, can now block message content when the message has a specific message classification, or sensitivity

SyncPlus Redact, a sensitive content filter for Exchange ActiveSync, can now block message content when the message has a specific message classification, message sensitivity, or other custom markings.  The feature extends the reach of SyncPlus Redact into companies that have adopted message classification solutions.

Complete Messaging released the new version of SyncPlus Redact this week, marking the most significant feature improvement since the initial release in May of this year.

Data can be synchronized to mobile devices without ever being processed by today's mainstream data loss prevention technology

Brian Clink, President, Complete Messaging

SyncPlus Redact is a software module add-on that works with Microsoft Exchange Server.  SyncPlus Redact protects company reputation by identifying and reducing incidents of data ex-filtration via ActiveSync, which increases both security of Exchange and awareness of sensitive data policies.

Complete Messaging’s president Brian Clink built the SyncPlus Redact solution after having an epiphany:

“After 10 years of designing and architecting security and productivity solutions in the Microsoft Exchange space, you get a lot of insights into technology, and areas of opportunity.  When the idea surfaced to filter Exchange ActiveSync for sensitive data to improve security of mobile devices, it seemed such a no-brainer, I had to just do it.”

Current DLP technologies have focused on data in motion, and locking down sensitive data as it leaves the organization through standard SMTP message delivery protocols.  SyncPlus Redact adds a layer of protection over synchronization of data at rest, preventing sensitive data from being synchronized to mobile devices.

“Data at rest is a misnomer,” added Brian, “data can be synchronized to mobile devices without ever being processed by today’s mainstream data loss prevention technology.”

The initial feature set included rules to block content based on regular expressions, and included a default rule to block credit card numbers.  SyncPlus Redact has implemented a Luhn validation algorithm, which is a popular algorithm used for validating many types of numbers, such as credit cards, and government identification numbers (e.g. Canada’s Social Insurance Number.)

SyncPlus Redact “redacts” sensitive content in emails by blocking the specific sensitive content, or blocking the affected area where the sensitive content exists, or blocking the entire message, based on frequency of occurrence.

SyncPlus Redact works with an on-premises deployment of Microsoft Exchange Server, which means the company needs to have control over the server resources in order to install the server-side software.  “Although Microsoft’s hosted offerings continue to gain traction in the marketplace, there will still be on-premises deployments of Exchange Server, where SyncPlus Redact can be installed”, said Brian.

A trial version of SyncPlus Redact is available upon request.
