New Vision Eye Center Announces Treatment Options for Macular Degeneration at Their Eye Clinic in Dubai

Dubai, UAE, October 19, 2015 (Newswire.com) - Age Related Macular Degeneration – commonly known as AMD in the medical world is a disease that affects the eye by damaging the area back of the eye known as the macula which in turns destroys the central vision. AMD will make it difficult to do day to day things like driving and reading and even make it difficult to recognize faces as this macula main function is to provide the fine details and color details which is vital for clear vision.

An outpatient surgery option is made available known as laser photocoagulation. Through this procedure, laser energy is applied to close any leaks in the blood vessels in the retina and control the growth of the blood vessels. Lucentis is the FDA approved treatment for AMD. It is an injection injected to the eye after the eye is cleaned and numbed. Patients will only feel a little pressure in the area till the injection is given after which the pressure should be less if not totally gone.

With lucentis treatment AMD patients can enjoy an improved vision and/or maintain good vision especially for patients with wet AMD which has no total cure. Lucentis treatment is the best for managing the disease in the years to come. In fact this is mainly only prescribed for patients with wet AMD, as lucentis is not for everyone. Especially if the patient has an existing eye infection this procedure will not be carried out. This treatment method could bring upon side effects including cataract, a detached retina or even an eye infection, inflammation within the eye, etc.

More common and less serious side effects are pain in the eye, a red eye, vision with small specks, frequent tears, etc. It can even have non eye related side effects including infections in the throat and nose, UTI and respiratory infections and even headaches.

Avastin is an antibody. The above lucentis injection was deprived from the same. It is known to have the same effects and properties as the lucentis injection but has not been tested through clinical trials. It is still used to treat not only wet AMD, but also neovascular glaucoma, vein occlusions, diabetic retinopathy, etc. The cost of this treatment procedure is much less that the Lucentis injection.
