New Voices Short Film Festival to Premiere Diverse Collection of Cinema

The First Annual, One Night Only Film Festival Will Showcase Italian Short Films

New Voices Short Film Festival is a new festival of extraordinary short films created by emerging talent from Italy. The event kicks off its first annual one-night only on October 21st, 2012 at The Silent Movie Theatre in Los Angeles, California. This year has been titled and fashioned "New Voices from Italy" which will feature seven short films by Italy's most aspiring and unique filmmakers. Each film showing has either been in selection or has won awards in numerous international film festivals, including the Torino Film Festival and the Terra Di Cinema in Tremblay-en-France.

New Voices was created to perform as a bridge between Hollywood and the Independent. Surrounded by all the major TV and film studios by taking place in Hollywood, this first annual, one night only film festival will be a place where people will be able to preview films they normally wouldn't have the chance to be exposed to. The collection of Italian films that are being shown were all previewed together at film festivals in Europe and were produced with budgets ranging from $500 to $30,000. Regardless of the monetary budget, each filmmaker has their own unique voice, which is captured in each of the films that will be shown. These 7 films are of such substance that New Voices has declined to include an award for best film, as each film stands alone in its own light and merit. Instead, it will be a celebration of culture, film, and a night of cinematic liberation.

The festival will open with the world premiere of a new short film called "Death of a Star," (produced by Officine Kaplan, directed by Paolo Gonella, and starring Anthony Sisco), which is about a lonely Hollywood actor facing the "death" of his identity, and in the process, letting go of every inch of sanity that keeps him going. Via Curiel tells the story of the brief, chance encounter between a man and a woman, which expands the dimension of memory for both of them. The magazine Lo Straniero called the film "A recounting of harmonious, spectacular images, told with great economy and massive symbolic tension with a notion of magic rarely found these days." Mr. Doyle, which was in selection for both the Turin Film Festival 2011 and the Terra Di Cinema (2012), tells the story of a grief stricken writer whose alter ego, the titled Mr. Doyle, begins to wreak havoc on the young artist's life. Will life imitate art, or will the young writer find a way to put a stop to the madness? In Suicidio Di Un Paraplegico (2/10) the second short of a series, tells the tale of a paraplegic who is obsessed with tap dancing decides to commit suicide by trying out an electric wheelchair. Salvatore, directed by Bruno & Fabrizio Urso, is two people who dream of escaping their blue-collar circumstances in Sicily. They struggle to survive in a society tainted by unemployment and job insecurity. Here, the right to start a family is a privilege that a worker can't access without running the risk of losing his job. Fireworks, directed by Giacomo Abbruzzese, is about a city, Taranto, which has been home to Europe's largest steel industry, an immense and hideous complex that occupies every economical, visual and imaginary horizon, making it the most polluted city in Western Europe. On New Year's Eve, as the fireworks explode, an international group of ecologists decides to blow the entire factory up.
