New Website Explains Spanish Slang

Speaking Latino website tracks and translates more than 8,000 Spanish slang words

A new website helps people understand local Spanish unique to each country. www.SpeakingLatino.com is more than a simple website, it is a free database of more than 8,000 Spanish words and phrases from Latin-American countries. People browse by letter, by country or just simply search a specific word from the database.

www.SpeakingLatino.com is the most complete guide to Spanish slang featuring translations in English as the main difference from other sites that list only the words and definitions in Spanish. The site also includes synonyms, antonyms, sample sentences to demonstrate the word's usage and even some categories such as food, drink, money and common words. In addition, knowledgeable users may enter in new words to help share local definitions as the slang evolves.

The site also helps people that are in the process of learning Spanish to increase their vocabulary and to understand regional Spanish pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary differences as they travel from country to country. Visitors, locals and even translators will benefit from the content of this site.

Created by Jared Romey, an American that learned Spanish as an adult traveling throughout Latin America, the website includes not just the database but also a regular blog. His initial struggles to understand local Spanish drove him to launch his blog and write four books, including two bestsellers, about the slang unique to Puerto Rico, Chile and Argentina. "Spanish varies from country to country and can be confusing even for people that speak it as their first language", said Romey. "Imagine how challenging it is for someone learning as an adult when for example the word "kite" may be translated as papalote, chiringa, cometa, volantin or barrilete depending on your location" he shares.

SpeakingLatino.com and the Speaking Latino series of language guides by Jared Romey include books and e-books. His current titles are Speaking Boricua, Speaking Phrases Boricua, Speaking Chileno and Speaking Argento, all available at major online retailers.
