NewAge(R) Industries' Employees Walk To Help Others & End Up Helping Themselves In The Process
Three of NewAge Industries' team member committees - ESOP, Wellness, and Helping Hands - worked together to help those in need. Three charities benefited from the employees' efforts, and employees became healthier themselves by walking.
Online, November 23, 2011 (Newswire.com) - The team members of tubing manufacturer NewAge Industries recently walked for charity to help celebrate Employee Stock Ownership month in October and the company's two newest committees, the Wellness Committee and Helping Hands, a group focusing on volunteerism and charitable activities. The new committees worked together with NewAge's ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) committee on a month-long program to help others as well as themselves.
Each team member was given a pedometer in late September and asked to wear it during October, both at and away from work. Team members were made aware that if they collectively walked five million steps, a donation would be made to a charity. Another donation would be made at ten million steps, and a third benefit - something for the team members - would be announced should the group reach fifteen million steps. Team members checked in with a Wellness Committee member weekly to report the number of steps taken over the past week.
The team reached five million steps during the second week of October, and the company made a donation to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast cancer organization. By the end of the third week, over ten million steps had been taken. The company again made a donation, this time to the American Brain Tumor Foundation.
The team members' final number of steps totaled 18,723,239, which translates to nearly 9,000 miles walked. Team members enjoyed a catered hot breakfast and received an embroidered jacket for reaching the target, but the real benefit is the teams' eagerness to pull together as a group to make something happen for others. Many team members also realized how sedentary their daily lives are and had to consciously increase their daily steps to help meet the goals. And they're a bit healthier because of it.
The NewAge team collected and donated 400 lbs. of clothing in October as well and is now focusing on a food drive to benefit a local pantry and on its annual Toys for Tots drive. Last year team members donated over 25 bags of food to MANNA on Main Street, a soup kitchen and pantry located in Lansdale, Pa., and provided 275 new toys to underprivileged children for the holidays.
