Niagara Pharma Firm and University Collaborate on Landmark Covid Initiative
ST. CATHARINES, Ontario, November 25, 2020 (Newswire.com) - Biolyse Pharma Corporation, a Canadian pharmaceutical firm based in St.Catharines, has received an expedited Natural Product Number (NPN) from Health Canada to produce and distribute pharmaceutical-grade Quercetin Dihydrate.
Quercetin, a major dietary flavonoid found in a wide range of fruits, vegetables, and beverages such as tea and wine, is showing promise in treating COVID-19.
In addition, through a Canadian federal NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council) grant, Biolyse Pharma has enlisted Dr. Travis Dudding and his Brock University post-graduate researchers: Ivor Smajlagic, Rozhin Rowshanpour, and Srini Vemulapalli to study ways to further improve Quercetin's effectiveness against Covid-19.
Biolyse spokesperson John Fulton said that "Biolyse Pharma, The Dudding Group, and teams from the USA, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, are collaborating in the fight against Covid-19. We intend to use these widely-available, low-cost natural products, that can be turned into powerful weapons to fight this pandemic."
In a letter to Canada's Cabinet Committee on the Federal Response to the Corona Virus disease (Covid-19) Biolyse asked for additional government support for their Quercetin project. Biolyse hopes to manufacture and supply enough high-quality Quercetin, in a kit to include Vitamin C, Vitamin D, and Zinc, to be accessible to all Canadians. It will be a vital way to boost the immune system, while following protocol (as prophylaxis from infection of Covid-19) that is endorsed by Dr. Paul Marik, Professor of Medicine and Chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia.
Further medical science is backing up the effectiveness of Quercetin. A recent clinical trial being published by Dr. Amr Ahmed, the Director of Mobile Team Tuberculosis Ghubera, from Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Health, studied the quadruple therapy of Zinc, Quercetin, Bromelain and Vitamin C on the clinical outcomes of patients infected with Covid-19.
The recently published clinical trial in The Lancet by Dr. Hasan Onal, from the Istanbul Kanuni Sultan Suleyman Training and Research Hospital, analyzed the therapeutic effect of Quercetin and Vitamin C on pre-exposure prophylaxis from Covid. Both studies support the immune-system boosting benefits of Quercetin as an effective supplement to fight Covid-19.
"Our intent is not to be alarmists, but to be proactive in a situation that does not have very many options at this time," said Brigitte Kiecken, President of Biolyse Pharma.
Dr. Travis Dudding of The Dudding Group adds: "This opportunity is allowing my students to gain valuable hands-on training directly applicable to working in the chemical industry, and the discovery of drug treatments."
Other clinical assessments regarding Quercetin based treatments:
"We must go back to the secrets of herbal science to protect ourselves from future viruses," said Dr. Amr Ahmed, Ministry of Health Saudi Arabia.
"The Mechanisms of Quercetin in Covid-19 were reviewed in 2020 Anwar E, et al. as a broad-spectrum antiviral agent including SARS-COV-2 and an immuno-modulator maintaining T cells CD4 to CD8 ratio," said Dr. Eman Anwar, Alexandria Faculty of Medicine, Egypt.
"Quercetin may have an important adjunctive role in the management of Covid-19," adds Dr. Paul Marik of Eastern Virginia Medical School.
"Depending on the results of our study and clinical experiences, we witnessed that many lives were saved through Quercetin use," comments Dr. Hasan Onal Kanuni Sultan Süleyman, Training and Research Hospital Istanbul, Turkey
