Nissan LEAF To Set Guinness World Record For Traveling in Reverse

Online, June 29, 2012 (Newswire.com) - At the Goodwood Festival of Speed this year, the Nissan LEAF will attempt to set the Guinness World Record for speed traveling in reverse. It has been said that the LEAF can travel as fast backwards as it does forwards, so this record could potentially be proof.

The 100% electric Nissan LEAF will attempt to complete the 1.16-mile Goodwood hillclimb course as fast as possible in reverse. If completed, it will set a new Guinness World Record for the fastest time over a distance of one mile in reverse.

Not all cars are capable of traveling in reverse like the LEAF. Nissan's all electric car features direct drive from the electro motor to its wheels making it able to hit the same top speed going backwards as it does going forwards.

The low center of gravity and batteries that are located under the floor of the car make the LEAF very stable at speed with little body roll under cornering. It also has fewer moving parts than a conventional car so it is less likely to run into mechanical issues during the attempt.

The Nissan LEAF record attempt is part of The Big Turn On, Nissan's ambitious social media-driven campaign. The goal of this campaign is to spread the EV message across Europe proving that the LEAF is safe, economical to run, practical and fun to drive while being economically friendly.

Terry Grand, a professional stunt driver, will be attempting the reverse record at the Goodwood Festival of Speed that takes place from June29-July 1. This is not Terry's first visit at the Festival of Speed. In 2011 he thrilled crowed by driving a Nissan JUKE up the hillclimb course on only two wheels.
