As an extension of the comprehensive COVID-19 response programme, MMC Norilsk Nickel, headed by Vladimir Potanin, is deploying new measures to hospitals in the Murmansk Region and substantive help to support local medical facilities.

Norilsk Nickel started construction of a new building of the Monchegorsk Central Regional Hospital with four departments. The Company will be co-financing the modernisation of the Bayandin Murmansk Regional Clinical Hospital for a total of US $133mln (RUB 1bn). The construction phase will be concluded by 2022 when the new hospital complex is expected to be fully functional.

“Norilsk Nickel is actively involved with the region in a meaningful and thoughtful way: it is making substantial contributions and adheres to the principles of high social responsibility, all of which makes our partnership effective.” –  said Andrey Chibis, Governor of the Murmansk Region.

The Company is cooperating closely with the regional administration on a number of significant projects. Several significant agreements have already been signed between Norilsk Nickel and the region, which, apart from the construction of the new hospital, include the development of the region, increasing its investment and tourism attractiveness, and improvement of welfare conditions for the citizens.

“Healthcare in the North must be modern. It is appreciated that the company understands this and is meeting us halfway, providing substantial support,” as Andrey Chibis concluded.

The construction process on the new hospital ward has already been started as designers, engineers and surveyors have arrived in Monchegorsk to start examining the construction site. All decisions regarding construction solutions will be made jointly with the Company and the regional government.

Repurposing of a specialized ward in an empty ICRC building is also under consideration as an additional option. In the near future, it will be examined for safety and the possibility of using it for the construction of a new hospital building.
