Northeast Carpenters Training Center Wins 2019 New Good Neighbor Award

Training Center Offers State-of-the-Art Educational Facility for Carpentry- Career Opportunity

The Northeast Carpenters Apprenticeship Fund Edison Training Center is a recent recipient of a 2019 New Good Neighbor Award.

The New Jersey Business & Industry Association and New Jersey Business magazine sponsor the award for firms that have contributed to the economic growth of their communities or made significant improvement in noteworthy projects during the previous two years.

“We are both honored and gratified at winning this award,” said Nick DeMatteo, executive director of the Carpenters’ training center. “It is a testament to our vision of producing a world-class education center for men and women of all backgrounds who see carpentry as a worthwhile career choice.”

While many of the trainees are apprentice carpenters who begin an educational track of five years before reaching journeyman status, it also provides ongoing training and certification for experienced carpenters.

The $32 million project provides wide-open spaces for hands-on training in carpentry, floor, mill-cabinet, millwright and pile driving trades. Students have access to state-of-the-art audio-visual technology, or overhead bridge crane for rigging steel concrete forms, pile driving materials and millwright equipment, welding booths and a fully equipped cabinet shop to support the mill-cabinet program. The training center has a 300-seat auditorium for meetings and presentations. It also has a five-level parking garage.

The training center expects to train more than 1,000 apprentices and journeymen annually. More than 100 carpenters were employed during the construction of the center, and it continues to employ more than 20 full-time and six part-time employees.

“If anyone in New Jersey ever thought about joining the building trades as a career, we welcome them,” says DeMatteo. “What we can promise them is the educational setting, services, and instructors that are the best in New Jersey.”

There were 13 New Good Neighbor Award winners representing $388 million in capital investment, 5,124 construction jobs and 2,900 permanent jobs, according to New Jersey Business magazine.

The architect for the project was DiCara| Rubino Architects, and the builders were Fitzpatrick & Associates and Epic Construction Co.
