Calling all Virginia dog owners! Do you live in Arlington, Alexandria, Dumfries, Fairfax, Falls Church, Herndon, Leesburg, Loudoun County, Stafford County, or Vienna? The point your browser to http://northern-virginia-dog-blog.com for the latest in canine news and fun!
"As local governments, we're always looking for ways to make Northern Virginia the best place possible for the whole family, including those members who happen to have four legs," said Laura Grape, who chairs the partnership that sponsored the effort. "We're launching this blog to provide local dog owners with a fun and informal way to learn about the opportunities, services, and requirements that local governments have for them."
"Who says government has to be dull? Visitors will find the information they need mixed in with a healthy dose of canine entertainment they want," said Eric Eckl, principal for Water Words That Work, LLC, who will produce the Northern Virginia Dog Blog under contract to the partners. "Funny videos, cute stories, helpful tips, photo contests, this blog will have them all."
The Northern Virginia Dog Blog is intended to be fun -- but it also has a serious side: preventing water pollution from dog doo left on the ground. Dog doo is a surprisingly large source of the disease causing germs that pollute local streams and the Chesapeake Bay. The partners estimate that there are more than half a million dogs in the Northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC. Even at just a few ounces per day, that adds up to more than 50 million pounds of dog doo per year.
The Northern Virginia Dog Blog team will work to reduce the amount of that doo that reaches local creeks. The writers will periodically remind readers to do their part -- picking up after their dogs while out walking and from the yard around their homes.
