Northwest Arkansas Treatment Center First Site Initiated in Global Research on Ovarian Cancer

Rogers, AR, May 20, 2016 (Newswire.com) - ​​Highlands Oncology Group (Highlands), Northwest Arkansas’ leading cancer research group, is at the forefront of ovarian cancer treatment research and breakthroughs. Highlands is proud to be the first site in the world initiated in a global study on the value of immunotherapy in ovarian cancer patients. ​

The study will explore the value of “anti-PDL-1” immunotherapy, in concurrence with chemotherapy, in the treatment of patients with targeted ovarian cancer. Highlands was was involved in the first phase of the trial.​

Immunotherapy is treatment that uses certain parts of a person’s immune system to fight diseases such as cancer, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). Ways this can be achieved include stimulating one's own immune system to work harder or smarter to attack cancer cells and providing immune system components, such as man-made immune system proteins, according to the ACS.​

Ovarian cancer is the 11th most common cancer among women and the fifth leading cause of cancer related death among women, according to the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance. A woman’s lifetime risk of developing invasive ovarian cancer is one in 75. As ovarian cancer is the deadliest among the gynecologic cancers and continues to devastate the health of many women, continued research on the treatment of ovarian cancer is essential. ​
