Now Accepting Media Credential Requests for the 2019 Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championship, Friday, May 31st Through Sunday, June 2nd at Talen Energy Stadium in Suburban Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA, May 15, 2019 (Newswire.com) - Media credential requests for the upcoming 2019 Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championship, the world’s largest collegiate rugby festival, are now being accepted online at http://www.sevensrugby.com/college/?page_id=5304&preview=true.
Qualified members of the news media should submit their application in advance of this year’s competition. Applications will be reviewed before approval is granted, and notification of that approval will be sent via e-mail to each qualified media applicant. The online application deadline is May 20, 2019.
Credentials will be available for pick up prior to the 2019 Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championship beginning Thursday, May 30th at the tournament’s hotel headquarters. Media credentials will then be available at the Media Will Call table at the entrance to Talen Energy Stadium on Saturday, June 1st and Sunday, June 2nd.
The 24-team men’s college rugby 7s field, competing for the Pete Dawkins Trophy, is led by defending champion Lindenwood University and last year’s runner-up, UCLA, along with Arizona; Army; Boston College; California; Clemson; Colorado; Dartmouth; Fordham; Indiana; Iona; Kutztown; Life; Navy; Notre Dame; Penn State; Saint Joseph’s; St. Bonaventure; St. Mary’s; South Carolina; Temple; Virginia Tech and Wisconsin.
The 2019 Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championship men’s winner will once again receive the Pete Dawkins Trophy, named after the All-American football standout at West Point won the Heisman Trophy in 1958. Dawkins was a Rhodes Scholar and attended Oxford, where he used his outstanding football skills to make him a star on the Oxford Varsity rugby team, revolutionizing the game in the process. The men’s most valuable player will receive the Mark Dombroski Most Valuable Player Trophy, named in honor of the late Saint Joseph’s rugby player who passed away in March 2018.
The 16-team women’s college rugby 7s field, competing for the Jon B. Prusmack Cup, is led by defending champion Lindenwood University and last year’s runner-up, Penn State, alongside Army, Bloomsburg, Delaware, Drexel, Kutztown, Life, Navy, Northeastern, Notre Dame, Queens University, Saint Joseph’s, Temple, Virginia Tech as well as the National Small College Rugby Organization Selects Squad.
The 2019 Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championship will be televised live by the ESPN family of networks and will feature the most television and digital coverage in the tournament’s history.
This year marks the ninth consecutive year that the event has been held in Philadelphia and at Talen Energy Stadium. The annual event features not only the nation’s top 24 men’s and top 16 women’s collegiate rugby 7s teams, but also the Freedom Cup regional competition with a six-team field vying for a spot in next year’s main bracket. Action also includes the National Small College Rugby Organization national championship and a national high school tournament with both boys’ and girls’ teams.
