NYC PictureStart Film Festival - 2013

17th NYC PictureStart Film Festival

Founded in 2002, the annual NYC PictureStart Film Festival showcases short films by emerging and established filmmakers from all corners of the world.

The festival program will showcase 24 international films of all genres, including four South African films and three commissioned films inspired by art work in the coffee table book, LOVE IS. (www.bookloveis.com).

Opening night will serve as a tribute to NYPSFF's April 2013's inaugural event in South Africa by screening the films shown there with support of South African Tourism and the South African Consulate.

The festival will be judged by a jury panel of industry leaders including: Rabinder Sira (Executive Producer - The Loneliest Planet, The Lifeguard, Shit Year); Scott Dacko (Director/Producer/Writer - The Insurgents); and DJ Mendel (Actor/Director - Hal Hartley films - Meanwhile; Fay Grimm; The Girl From Monday).

Says New York-based Ben Arredondo, Executive Director of NYCPSFF, "When people asked me, 'Why South Africa for a film festival?' my best answer was because our cool unconventional festival has been approached by visitors here to bring NYCPSFF to other countries. By doing this, it contributes to the true international spirit of the festival and it's a great opportunity for aspiring filmmakers to get their work recognized and hopefully achieve their filmmaking dreams. Other places being looked at for future events in our visiting series include Mexico, Australia and other cities in the U.S."

Additionally, keeping with tradition in helping charitable organizations, NYCPSFF is partnering with Squared Shaped Circles and their first project, the coffee table art book, LOVE IS. 27 artists depicting "love" themed work were paired with writers. LOVE IS is launching in NYC on the last night of the NYCPSFF. Books will be sold throughout the festival. Proceeds of the book will be distributed to three international charities. To tie the festival and book project, three short films have been commissioned that were inspired by artwork from the book. Films will premiere last night of festival, June 6.

Tickets are $5, purchased at door; drinks and food available to buy at venue
