NYC's Fire Department Uses Digital Kiosks To Promote Fire Safety Campaign

The FDNY uses interactive computer kiosks to share fire safety lessons with the public. The self-service information kiosks from Advanced Kiosks display games, tips and links to a fire prevention website.

The FDNY has improved its reach in delivering fire safety lessons around the city. The department installed several interactive computer kiosks loaded with games, tips and video as a part of its Fire Smart fire safety education campaign. The self-service kiosks are used to share fire prevention and safety lessons with the public. Units are located at Rockefeller Plaza, Staten Island and other sites throughout the city.

"The most effective way to fight fires is to prevent them, and the best way to prevent fires is through education," said FDNY Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano. "(The Fire Smart) initiative will bring our fire safety education directly to classrooms, homes, and streets of New York City." The Commissioner mentioned that the department is using kiosks as a means to deliver the program because of its interactive functionality. "We're using technology to create a program that will make people of all ages, and especially children, fire smart," he said.

Howard Horn, president of Advanced Kiosks, who provided the interactive kiosks for the program, said the company designed the units to be helpful and fun for adults and children. "By creating a fire safety game and other kid-friendly media, along with the information for adults, the (fire) department can educate all ages," he said.

FDNY officials contacted the company in late 2010 to supply them with free standing kiosks and compact power units, and design an educational fire safety game called Fire Safety Trivia. Kiosk users can also interact with the fire education site: fdnyfiresmart.org.

FDNY Foundation project manager Jonathon Chuang explained the benefits of including the kiosk as part of the campaign. "The free standing kiosk is an attractive and eye-catching addition to our arsenal of Fire Safety Education tools. It helps us bring important fire safety messages in a fun and interesting way, and it allows the public to interact with our new website and the fire safety trivia game in different places all around the city, and reminds people of the importance of fire safety," he said.
