UK stairlift supplier, Oakland Stairlifts, today announced the top ten areas to settle in once people retire.

With the retirement age now risen it can seem like a long way away for some people before they will be able to sit back and enjoy the fruits of their long hours of labour in the busy business world.

For some people however the lower retirement age is still applicable, meaning that in just a few short years they won't have to work and will in fact be able to live their lives as leisurely as they want to, doing anything that they want as well.

Recently the top ten areas that people move to in retirement were researched by experts at The Guardian, a newspaper, that assessed where the best mixes of low house prices, low council tax, low crime rates and good healthcare were throughout the UK and came out with the following list.

1. Craven, a small rural district in North Yorkshire that has plenty or sun, but also rain, and a low population density meaning that there's plenty of room for everyone. House prices in the area are low and so is the level of council tax people will need to pay. This area is near to the Yorkshire Dales National Park which is an area of great natural beauty and great walks for anyone that's interested.

2. North Dorset, a place where people can take in the atmosphere or a truly classic Britain, as it played host to 'Tess Of The D'Urbervilles', a popular period drama. North Dorset plays host to The Great Dorset Steam Fair, which displays the world's largest collection of working steam engines each year.

3. West Devon, yet another area of outstanding natural beauty, taking in about half of the Dartmoor National Park. The community is described as one of the most supportive in England, with 90.78% of people thinking that their neighbours will look out for them in a time of crisis.

4. Purbeck, a place for those that love the sea, this takes in the Isle of Purbeck Peninsula growing to cover areas west and north along the River Frome. This is a walker's paradise, and is the only area in England to have a Natural World Heritage Site, thanks to the outstanding amount of unique geology found there.

5. East Devon, an area with many local hospitals that is close to the sea for those that long to spend their retirement on the beach. This area is filled with traditional seaside resorts and hosts one of the most beautiful coastlines in England, which is perfect for those that love walking.

6. West Dorset, a place with a low level of rainfall for people that want to retire in England but somewhere that is dryer than everywhere else. The area is often used for film settings thanks to the incredible amount of natural scenery. Tamara Drewe is just one of the movies that was filmed here.

7. Torridge, an area that lends its name to the River Torridge, and including the island of Lundy for anyone that wants to see some great wildlife. This place is well-known for being on the most untouched places by man in England, having maintained its natural beauty like no other place in the UK.

8. Eden, including part of the Lake District National Park and various market towns, this is a place that is buzzing with activity for those that want to seek it out. Many people feel this area is appropriately named due to the lakes and mountains the area holds in its borders.

9. South Hams, probably the best place on the list for those with a love for fishing and sailing thanks to the unspoilt coastline that has maintained its natural beauty. This area is known for its beaches which are among some of the most beautiful to be found in the UK.

10. Derbyshire Dales, a classic place that is full of small towns rich in history. Anyone that wants to spend their retirement wandering the streets of historical villages and walking through tranquil countryside will find everything they need here.

Of course retirement is a long time away for many people and new places may open up in the years to come that will prove to be more appropriate for anyone wanting to move in retirement.
