Obesity Linked to Liver Cancer Risk in Two Recent Studies
Obesity has been linked to many adverse metabolic conditions such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease along with fatty liver disease.
Online, August 1, 2012 (Newswire.com) - Two recent studies-one from the European Association for the Study of the Liver and one from the University of Texas Health Center-have linked obesity and the risk of liver cancer. The first found that adults who were obese as children are at increased risk for liver cancer; the second looked at the incidence of liver cancer and obesity rates among South Texas Latinos.
Although neither study offered conclusions on specific cause and effect, after adjusting for other factors, the link was apparent. Obesity has been linked to many adverse metabolic conditions such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease along with fatty liver disease.
"Obesity itself is a form of chronic disease and the cause, like other chronic diseases, is incorrect diet and lifestyle choices," say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH).
"We are actually 'hardwired' by evolution to eat whenever food is available and to choose the most calorie-dense foods possible," add the Griesels. "As an additional survival mechanism, we are also wired to conserve energy whenever possible. You could say we are lazy overeaters by design. Today's abundant food supply, along with all the new unnatural "food" products and easy access to them, is a very recent phenomenon that we are obviously not handling very well. Proper diet and lifestyle choices seem to be the only sure way to avoid modern chronic diseases and experience optimal health."
