Breast Cancer is being diagnosed in greater amounts than ever before, which is why it is important to receive a mammogram regularly. A mammogram is an X-ray technique that is specially used to detect any abnormalities in the breast tissue. Women who are at high risk of breast cancer or have a family history of breast cancer are advised to get a mammogram. How Is a Mammogram Performed?

Things to Tell a Physician Before Getting A Mammogram

• If the patient has suffered from any abnormalities of breasts, like lumps, etc.
• If the patient has any breast surgeries in the past.
• If the patient might be pregnant or is breastfeeding.

What to Expect During a Mammogram?

• Before the test, the patient needs to undress from the waist above
• The person will need a hospital gown, so that they can keep their pants on them.
• Then they will need to stand in front of the mammogram machine with their breasts firmly pressed against the machine.
• They might feel a little discomfort due to the compression. If it is painful, they can tell their technologists.
• It usually takes about 20 minutes; their breasts are compressed just for a few seconds
• Typically, two views of each of the breasts are taken; if they have implants, then more pictures are made to get better results.

Patients will typically get their results the next day. Mammograms are beneficial to know if a lump is cancerous or not. If their physician suspects a cancerous lump, they will ask them to get a biopsy. It is important to mention that 95 percent of the biopsies come out as negative. Women should not be afraid to get breast lumps checked, as early detection is the key to prevention.
