Odds of Finding Love Online: One in a Million

Todayter is a new web dating experiment that takes a non-traditional approach to internet dating by featuring only one user a day.

The internet has revolutionized the American dating scene, with specialized sites making it painless for anyone to seek, meet, discover, or reject potential soul mates, all without even having to leave the house. But with "over 20 million registered users" on popular dating site eHarmony alone, the odds of finding your true love online are astronomically low-but let's use a more romantic phrase and say the odds are "one in a million."

Just as it is with more traditional methods of attracting a mate, with online dating sites it's all about playing the game. Typically, dating sites offer what seems to be a level playing field: supermodels and the unattractive, socialites and the uninteresting, scientists and the unintelligent are all given the opportunity to mingle with one another with no social stigma attached. This same strategy is used on every dating site, and results can be spotty and underwhelming. Fortunately, there is an unusual, unique alternative just on the horizon.

A new social web experiment named Todayter is hoping to shake up the old-fashioned internet dating formula. Instead of a million users scrambling to message one another nonstop, day in and day out, attention is given only to only one individual per day. The lucky user will then have the "pick of the litter," being able to respond to (and of course, date) whichever fellow users send the most compelling message during his or her 24 hours in the spotlight. In effect, the online dating trend is reversed; instead of having one chance in a million to find love online, featured users will have a million chances to find their one true love!

The project officially launches on Monday, August 2nd, and at first will feature only profiles for users based in New York City, with plans to expand across the United States (and perhaps beyond) as user demand increases. Initially, the team working on the site offer everything from video promotion to punching up user profiles for the first few lucky featured users.

Todayter is a project by Alex Buran, an internet entrepreneur behind some web fads such as That Intoxicated (http://www.ThatIntoxicated.com), a site that features tales of drunken shenanigans, and Funny Translator (http://www.FunnyTranslator.com), which literally minces words by translating back and forth between English and 58 other languages, with often humorous results; as well as serious translation projects such as Translation Services USA (http://www.translation-services-usa.com) and ConveyThis (http://www.ConveyThis.com), his New York-based translation agency and automated website translator, respectively.
