Ohio Resident Recognized For Driving Retirement

A 92-year old Ohio resident has been recognized by Keeping Us Safe for making a voluntary retirement from 77 years of safe driving.

In ceremonies held at The Residence of Chardon, Donald Douglass was presented with Keeping Us Safe's prestigious "Certificate of Honor" award.

Mr. Douglass (92 yoa) was recognized by Matt Gurwell, Founder & CEO of Keeping Us Safe for his decision to voluntarily retire from 77 years of safe driving.

Gurwell stated that "Mr. Douglass serves an inspiration and example to others in so many ways, but especially with his recent decision to retire from driving."

During the ceremony, Mr. Douglass recalled that his only accident occurred in 1965, when he backed into a parked car on a crowded, narrow city street in Pennsylvania.

Mr. Douglass made the decision to stop driving because of a few medical concerns, along with another imminent harsh northeast Ohio winter right around the corner. "Alberta and I discussed it, and decided this was the right decision" Douglass said. "Our son lives close and has been very helpful, he has volunteered to help us get around" Douglass explains.

Alberta "Al" Douglass, and husband Donald will celebrate 68 years of marriage on Valentine's Day, 2012. Donald and Alberta have two sons, Keith (resides in Ohio), and Donald (resides in North Carolina). They also have five grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren, all of whom Alberta describes as the "loves of their lives".

"Donald and Alberta are both extraordinary people who, at a very early age, decided to commit their lives to serving others. Their lifelong dedication to helping people from across the world has been an inspiration to so many" Gurwell added.

The retired driver "Certificate of Honor" is a program sponsored by Keeping Us Safe, a national organization with programs for older drivers and their families.
