Silicone vs. Saline? What type of implant should you get?

Many women wonder which is better - Saline or Silicone - for their implant of choice. In my practice, women are increasingly opting for silicone implants to surgically improve the shape and size of their breasts.

What is the driving force behind this decision? For most, it is the desire for a post-augmentation look that has a much more natural look and feel.

In my professional opinion, the silicone implant is definately better than the saline implant as far as aesthetics and performance. Manufacturers have re-engineered and improved the silicone implant. More recent models have a thicker and stronger casement around them, reducing the risk of leaks or rupture.

The silicone used in the newest generation of implants is improved too. It has been re-engineered so that there is cross-linking. Essentially that means the the molecules adhere to each other better and the silicone is more likely to keep its shape. They call it 'memory gel.'

This same cross-linking technology is also used to manufacture the casement, which again creates a better product.

Rippling, a frequent criticism with saline breast implants, is much less like to occur with silicone implants. Rippling, which creates a scallop-like effect, is normally seen toward the edge of the implant, where it forms a fold or crease under the breast tissue.

Finally, I have also found that silicone implants tend to work better for very thin and small-breasted women, producing a more appealing result.

I encourage all women who are considering breast augmentation surgery to arrive at their consultation armed with questions so that we can best evaluate the options currently available and help them achieve the look they desire.
