When shopping online, a buyer needs to be sure the page receiving personal information is safe and secure. But how? One thing is universal.
Online, December 13, 2010 (Newswire.com) - With holiday shopping going on, comparison search engine Onewayshopping has released top online shopping safety tips to ensure a risk-free holiday shopping experience this year.
"The concept of online shopping has made it easier to look for deals without the hassle of leaving our homes. In fact, we get to enjoy a lot more when it comes to discounts and sales online" said Anderson Koibita, Onewayshopping.com's co-founder and CEO. "However, through time, the threat and risks of invasion of private information has increased and shoppers should keep their safety in mind."
Onewayshopping's 10 safety tips for Holiday Shopping:
1. Install Security Software or update your home computer's anti-virus software before you start shopping. Remember to keep your software current by downloading security updates and patches.
2. Carefully review return policies as well as terms and conditions. Review the privacy policy for the website/merchant you are visiting. These policies provide information on what the seller is gathering from you.
3. Use strong passwords that are hard to guess. A combination of letters, symbols, numbers and capital letters tend to be more secure. Create strong passwords for all online accounts, particularly those used for banking or shopping.
4. Shop on only secure websites: Always look for the security icon - a locked padlock or unbroken key symbol - in the web page where you enter credit card or other personal information, check to see if the Web site begins with https to indicate a secure connection.
5. Conduct your research in details: Use all the resources the internet provides, conduct comparison shopping and search for online deals to guarantee that you're saving money.
6. Upgrade your browser. Upgrade your Internet browser to the most recent version available. Review the browser's security settings. Browsers are continuously updated by their providers to cope with the increasingly complex online environment.
7. Use credit cards - Using the same credit for all you're online shopping. This will allow you to assess your online purchases to make sure that there are no fraudulent charges. You'll also be better protected from fraud and face minimal liability in the event of your card number being stolen.
8. Keep receipts. After making a purchase online, be sure to print out the receipt as well as confirmation information for your records. Also keep a record of the product description and price, and copies of every e-mail you send or receive from the retailer.
9. Beware of certain unsolicited emails asking for personal information or promising an exceptional deal as they could be part of a 'phishing' scam. Phishing is an attempt to collect personal information through e-mail or pop-ups that appear to be legitimate.
10. Inspect your delivery as soon as you receive it. Contact the seller as soon as possible if you notice a problem. Tell the merchant in writing about any problems you have, ask for a repair or refund, and keep a copy of your e-mail.
