Online dating site Forget Dinner - Blog News 5th October 2009

In this week's blog for the London Evening Standard, Howard James takes a comical look at the dreaded dinner date. http://www.forgetdinner.co.uk

Ditch Dinner for Cheap Dates

I hate dinner dates.

Why? More dating disasters than I care to remember.

Yes, I can see the appeal. Under the table canoodling, feeding each other oysters and asparagus, the licking of lips, what's not to like?

But hold it right there, how many dinner dates actually play out like this?

Fact. The dinner date is bad idea for first time daters, a minefield.

Where to go (posh or funky?), what to order (shit, she's a vegetarian), the realisation that your date's nerves have kicked in, she's ploughed her way through the first bottle of wine and is rambling like Janet Street Porter full of Kendal mint cake.

I've been left waiting at the table while my date went to the Ladies' never to reappear lost in action via the bathroom window and witnessed first hand the devastating effects of shellfish allergies and lactose intolerance.

When paying the bill, I always offer and take it as read that if my date wants to go Dutch, she wants to ditch.

No forget dinner & do something interesting, more fun and less expensive instead?

London is full of opportunities and your date will admire your creativity & thoughtfulness. Playful dates are best, something you'll have in common. A shared sexy naughtiness that come with breaking the dating rules

Why not, blag your way into an art exhibition opening, go skating or brave an open mic night? Sure fire ways to give you something to talk and laugh about together.

Above all, remember to have fun - that's the whole point, right?
