Online Entrepreneurial Simulation, SimCEO, Named Most Innovative Ed Tech Solution at SIIA Summit

Teacher-created simulation allows students to create their own businesses, form interactive Classroom Stock Market.

Jetlag Learning is pleased to announce its flagship solution, simCEO (www.simceo.org), was awarded the "Most Innovative Ed Tech Product" at the recent Software and Information Industry Association's (www.siia.net) annual Ed Tech Summit in San Francisco. SIIA selects ten innovative solutions as finalists. SimCEO was chosen as the winner by industry-leaders in attendance at the conference.

The SIIA Innovation Incubator program, which has been supporting innovators in educational technology since 2006, identifies and supports entrepreneurs in their development and distribution of innovative learning technology. Since its inception, the program has provided mentoring for dozens of successful products and companies.

Created by High School Principal Derek Luebbe, simCEO points to a new model of learning where students compete against one another, instead of a program, as they pursue two goals simultaneously: to be the best investor and the most successful entrepreneur. In simCEO, students create their own online companies and manage their portfolios as they buy/sell shares in classmates' companies over a fictional 10-year timeframe. Housed within a dynamic, online, environment, simCEO can be customized by the teacher to target specific content and age ranges through customized assignments and frequent news articles.

Luebbe comments, "We are thrilled and honored to be selected by SIIA as the most innovative solution, and want to thank SIIA for the opportunity to share simCEO with a broader audience." He continues, "We believe simCEO represents a new way of learning for students. As a young company we're grateful for the opportunity to meet other leaders in the ed tech industry who can help us make a positive impact on learning.

The cross-disciplinary platform is what led teacher Matt Baughman from Newport, Vermont to integrate simCEO into his History unit, having students create companies within India in the 1920s and then introducing relevant news articles to see how they would apply the information. Baughman notes, "Truly unique. My students loved it."

To date, over 500 teachers from 30 plus countries have used simCEO into their classrooms for use with students aged 8-22. While targeting economics, business, and entrepreneurship, it's cross-disciplinary nature allows students to integrate content as they create solutions and evaluate each others' solutions.
