Online Starz Fans Reveal Dark Horse Actor for American Gods TV Series

As Neil Gaiman fans eagerly await the TV series adaptation of American Gods, fans tweet their casting ideas to Starz, with some surprising results.

As enthusiasm builds surrounding the adaptation of Neil Gaiman's American Gods for TV, fans on Twitter - spurred on by the Starz network itself in a June article (http://www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/american-gods-is-finally-coming-to-your-tv.html/?a=viewall#ixzz3kav7xmXN) - have revealed a surprising, dark horse contender for the role of Shadow.

Joshua Bermudez, 28, who goes by the virtually unknown Twitter handle @SaintGenesius, has received an unexpected snowballing of support from fans on the platform, after being rumored to have auditioned for the role in August.

"Shadow is a true classic hero," says Bermudez. "It's not just the gods in a modern setting that make the story so great, it's this figure with a kind of mythic quality to him."

A mixed race actor and former boxer, Bermudez graduated with a Master's Degree in Acting from the Yale School of Drama in 2013, a year after Oscar Winner Lupita Nyong'o.

"I don't know how this all shakes out, but it's obviously a huge honor to be mentioned at all," Bermudez says. "I've been reading Neil Gaiman since I was a teenager, so I honestly can't imagine anything more incredible than getting to play Shadow."

Starz Executive Producer Bryan Fuller has not revealed recent casting developments, but David Slade's attachment to the project as director was announced via Twitter on September 10, 2015. The series is expected to air in late 2016.
