While millions of people call Los Angeles home, only a hardy few swim marathon distances in Santa Monica Bay. Having completed the Triple Crown of marathon swims (Catalina Channel 2016, English Channel  2017 and Manhattan Island 2018), Abigail Bergman had been casting about for a new challenge. This swim across Santa Monica Bay from its northern-most point to southern-most tip has been on Bergman's bucket list for a few years.

Only three people have publicly completed this particular open-water swim. Bergman decided to tackle the swim this summer as something to work towards during the COVID-19 pandemic. "It seems like 2020 is all about staying local, so I'm inspired to honor my hometown by doing this swim."

The swim will begin at around 11 p.m. on Sept. 2 and Bergman estimates it will take approximately 14  to 15 hours to complete. She will have boat and kayak crews with her for safety, to provide feeds, and to certify the swim.

When Bergman is not in the ocean or pool, she manages Behavioral Science research. A proud Smith College alum, she intends to pursue a Ph.D.

Bergman's swim can be followed at track.rs/abby. Start time is estimated at around 11 p.m. PT. For more information or to contact Abigail Bergman, go to www.abbybergman.com.
