Houston, TX, September 15, 2015 (Newswire.com) - Bug Insights, LLLC, who provides prescriptive analytics that help drive business behaviors recently conducted a survey with 1,316 benefits-eligible individuals to more fully understand how total rewards and communication are perceived among employees. Bug Insights partnered with Turner Dillon Greco, Inc., an HR and benefits communication company that helps employers maximize their benefits investments through communication, to pose additional questions to gauge communication effectiveness. Results were presented during the annual Sawtooth Software Conference in March of this year.
“Our objectives were to understand employee opinions and preferences around total rewards as well as insights into communication effectiveness,” said Tim Glowa, co-founder and partner of Bug Insights. “Although most employees indicate they have a great understanding of their total rewards package, employees in non-leadership roles are less likely to agree the benefits offered by their employer meet their needs and the needs of their family.”

Key findings of the survey show that lower-paid employees believe their employer spends much less each year, per employee, on total rewards than is actually spent; for those making less than $50,000 a year, they believed the investment made by their employer was around $7,000. Respondents who earned $200,000 or more perceived the value as slightly more than $45,000 annually.
Bug Insights methodology differs from the more traditional and less prescriptive approaches typically used by consulting firms. “We make research actionable and drive business behavior by quantifying employee preferences so companies can make fact-based decisions today and in the future.”
Julie Horner, strategy and sales leader at Turner Dillon Greco said: “Our ability to impact business results is greatly magnified when we use optimized data to predict the barriers to a successful program implementation. There is a huge need for fact-based communication strategies.”
The study also identified areas where a significant confidence gap exists among employees in different pay scales. When asked “If my mother asked, I am confident I could clearly explain how my medical plan deductible and out-of-pocket cost work,” less than forty-four percent of respondents making less than $50,000 a year agreed with the statement. Understanding where communications are unclear may help to bridge the gap in how those in different pay scales understand total rewards and how their benefits work
Utilizing the Total Rewards Optimization approach will give employers a much more robust picture of how critically important an accurate understanding of employee preferences is in building a strategic plan that maximizes the ROI of Total Rewards and communication.
