Orange County Based Get My Auto Warns Used Car Shoppers to Beware of Flooded Cars

Natural disasters and even everyday rain storms can cause vehicles to flood—and that's something that buyers must remain cognizant of on the secondary market.

In recent weeks, as Hurricane Matthew has unleashed copious wind and rain on residents of Haiti, Cuba, and the United States, adverse weather has been on everyone’s mind. Bad weather can cause personal harm as well as property damage—including flood damage to vehicles. In fact, flooding can have a serious and long-lasting impact on cars and trucks, which is something that buyers on the secondary market need to be cautious about. Orange County based automotive blog Get My Auto has released a new statement to the press, providing some words of wisdom regarding flooded vehicles.

“Flood-damaged vehicles from parts of the country that get a lot of rain can end up anywhere,” says the Get My Auto statement. “Consumers must be prepared for the possibility that a flooded vehicle could show up on their local used car lot—and that the vehicle in question may not look as if there is anything wrong with it. Due diligence is critical.”

Flood damage can cause long-lasting damage to the engine and to the electrical system, though it may not be immediately noticeable to buyers. “What we recommend is that anyone shopping for used vehicles check the interiors thoroughly for any signs of water damage, or for the smell of mold or mildew,” Get My Auto advises.

Additionally, it is illegal in most states for flooded vehicles to be sold without a thorough description of the damage done—so those who buy from a reputable and licensed dealership should not encounter any trouble. “So long as you do your research to ensure that your seller is someone honest and respected, hopefully you will not receive any unwanted surprises,” comments the Get My Auto team. “Ultimately, if a vehicle is noted as being a flood victim, we’d advise buyers to simply steer away from it.”
