Orange County Dental Care Alerts on Importance of Preventative Dental Antibiotics in Avoiding Heart Infection

Orange County Dental Care discusses a shocking British study that shows an increase in heart infections in patients who were not provided preventative dental antibiotics.

A new study out of the United Kingdom suggests that British dental offices that have reduced or stopped using preventative antibiotics prior to engaging in dental work on patients could be the reason behind the recent increase in heart valve infections. An Orange County Dentist, Dr. Ali-Reza Etemadieh, has analyzed this study and found the results profound to the overall state of the Orange County dental industry and beyond. He encourages United States-based dental practices to not follow this disturbing British trend.

“There is little debate that a person’s mouth is full of bacteria,” stated Dr. Etemadieh.  “However, there are many dental procedures that provide opportunity for this bacteria to enter the bloodstream. Proper care should always be taken to assure this does not occur.”

Per the warning of Dr. Etemadieh, a patient’s health can be at risk if bacteria enters the bloodstream.  When this occurs, it can allow the bacteria to travel to the heart and cause an infection called endocarditis, a condition that is fatal in 10 to 20 percent of sufferers.  Ultimately, patients who have artificial heart valves and other types of implants are classified as high-risk for this disease.  In the United States, preventative dental antibiotics are regularly used on all patients.  However, the study notes that in the United Kingdom, the trend of providing drugs to high-risk patients has changed from mandatory to optional, with low-risk patients rarely delivered these important antibiotics.

Dr. Etemadiah also recognizes that there is no guarantee that preventative antibiotics lower the risk of endocarditis; however, his Orange County dental practice maintains the highest levels of quality and safety for all patients. “I can assure all of the patients of Orange County Dental Care that we fully endorse the use of these important drugs,” noted Dr. Etemadiah.

So far, there has not been any indication that British dental trends and a reduction in the use of preventative dental antibiotics have found a home amongst Orange County dentists or in the United States dental industry.  Moreover, there has not been any noted change in prescription practices in the United States.

“This is a shocking study,” states Dr. Etemadiah, “however there is no reason to be alarmed.  I encourage all individuals located in Southern California who are committed to their overall health to seek out a trusted Orange County dentist and make sure they engage in regular cleanings and oral health screenings. At Orange County Dental Care, we will continue to ensure the best care for our loyal patients.”
