Orchid Recovery Center Discusses Patient Hurdles Paying for Drug and Alcohol Addiction Treatment
Palm Springs, FL, June 23, 2015 (Newswire.com) - Orchid Recovery Center, a South Florida woman-centered drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility designed specifically to treat the needs of women who are ready to face their addiction issues, understands first-hand the struggles clients have when paying for inpatient drug and alcohol treatment. Many lack health insurance coverage that will pay for rehab services, and for those that do have insurance that provides coverage, they often find that it will not cover the full length of stay required for successful long-term treatment.
The cost of drug and alcohol addiction treatment, like all health and medical costs are on the rise. Both outpatient drug treatment programs and residential drug treatment centers come with expensive fees that many facing addiction cannot afford. Many health insurance policies provide for at least a percentage of coverage for detoxification and some outpatient treatment programs. Few, however, provide coverage for inpatient drug addiction intervention or sober living homes after drug rehab.
"Increasingly, health insurance is one of the key sources for women to finance treatment for drug addiction, which is why Orchid Recovery Center accepts most health insurance policies. However, we are also aware that more and more women are declining or postponing treatment for lack of insurance coverage and lack of funds. That is why we go out of our way to keep treatment costs as low as possible without compromising treatment."
Peter A. Harrigan, CEO of the Orchid Recovery Center
For those clients who are lucky enough to have health insurance that covers drug and alcohol rehab, many struggle with the length of stay the insurance company will cover. While many insurance policies cover up to 30 days in a residential center, very few clients actually receive the full 30 days covered. According to the Treatment Research Institute in Philadelphia, the average duration covered by insurance is 11 to 14 days, and after that insurance companies stop paying, and some facilities discharge patients before their treatment is done.
“At Orchid Recovery Center, our priority is providing women with effective and long-term drug addiction recovery,” says Peter A. Harrigan, CEO of the Orchid Recovery Center. “Increasingly, health insurance is one of the key sources for women to finance treatment for drug addiction, which is why Orchid Recovery Center accepts most health insurance policies. However, we are also aware that more and more women are declining or postponing treatment for lack of insurance coverage and lack of funds. That is why we go out of our way to keep treatment costs as low as possible without compromising treatment.”
At the heart of some of the debate is how drug and alcohol addiction is defined. Certainly it takes a physical, emotional, mental and even financial toll on addicts but the question most often asked by insurance companies is if the treatment they need is “medically necessary.” Most addiction specialists will agree that yes of course treatment is medically necessary but many struggling with addiction fall short of the insurance companies’ definition, and as a result do not have the insurance coverage they need.
Orchid Recovery Center encourages its clients to check with their insurance agent to see if and how much of their time at a drug treatment center can be covered. Those without insurance coverage may be able to purchase insurance coverage with a minimal wait period for claims having to do with a preexisting condition. Other companies offer supplemental insurance coverage. In addition, the U.S. Department of Health And Human Services provides information and resources on drug and alcohol addiction as well as relevant information on health insurance and Medicaid issues related to addiction treatment.
