Orchid Recovery Center Offers a Unique Women-Centered Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facility

To address the unique challenges women struggling with drug and alcohol addiction face, Orchid provides a women-only rehab facility with programs designed specifically for women, facilitated by a predominantly female staff.

The Orchid Recovery Center is a women-only drug and alcohol rehab facility in South Florida. The Orchid Model of treatment is unlike any other because of its unique focus on the needs of women suffering from the painful effects of drug addiction, alcoholism and unresolved trauma. The Orchid Model offers a variety of holistic healing methods to restore a woman’s body, mind and soul. Treatment programs are provided by a highly trained female staff in an environment designed to be as healing as the treatment itself.

According to a 2008 U.S. National Survey on Drug Use and Health, nearly seven percent of women age 12 and older have drug dependence and addiction with up to 12 percent dealing with alcohol abuse. Women are also victims of child abuse, domestic violence and sexual assault at a much higher rate than men leaving them vulnerable to drugs and alcohol as a way to ease the psychological trauma.

"The support system offered by an almost all female staff and other clients at Orchid helps provide the foundation for the treatment process at Orchid."

Peter A. Harrigan, CEO of the Orchid Recovery Center

Women face tougher challenges when dealing with addictions when compared to men. Women tend to progress much more quickly from using drugs and alcohol to dependence and find it more challenging to quit. Women addicts often have more guilt, shame and other mental health issues when compared to men and are less likely to seek treatment because of the social stigma and guilt associated with identifying as an addict. In addition, women are also more susceptible to relapse.

Further, a woman’s body composition and hormonal balance differs from a man’s. These differences effect how drugs and alcohol affect a woman’s body and have implications for long-term recovery and sobriety. Orchid offers hormone therapy, a fitness program and nutritional counseling in addition to other more traditional recovery treatments to maximize a woman’s health and energy to heal.

“One of the distinguishing characteristics of the Orchid Model is its focus on the unique ways in which women advance from substance use to abuse and addiction,” says Peter A. Harrigan, CEO of the Orchid Recovery Center. “Our women-centered approach allows Orchid clients to explore personal histories, uncover deep-rooted beliefs, and resolve lifelong complications in a safe and nurturing place. This individual attention becomes especially powerful in the context of the other holistic treatment and recovery programs available at Orchid.”

Orchid utilizes the groundbreaking treatment programs developed by Dr. Karen Dodge, known as “relational growth”, which found that women overcome addiction faster and more completely when they are supported by a community of other women who are experiencing the same issues and facing the same challenges related to alcohol or drug addiction.

Orchid’s treatment programs help guide women through a journey of growth and healing, and treatment is conducted in an environment of trust where a woman’s voice is heard and respected. This provides a sense of safety and security that is essential for a woman to take the initial steps necessary in dealing with untreated trauma and addiction.

“The support system offered by an almost all female staff and other clients at Orchid helps provide the foundation for the treatment process at Orchid,” adds Harrigan. “Women help other women heal and expert female counselors and therapists facilitate holistic treatment programs tailor made specifically for women to improve all aspects of their lives.”

The Orchid facility was carefully designed to work toward a woman’s treatment. Instead of an institutional or medical setting, the Orchid facility was designed with the aesthetics of healing in mind. Colors of the walls, textures and furnishings were chosen to encourage feelings of calm and well-being. Spaces for solitude and reflection coexist with gathering spaces that encourage socialization and networking.

Through treatment programs designed to address the unique needs of women addicts, Orchid affords women the opportunity to break the cycle of addiction to enjoy healthy, contented, serene and productive lives.
