Online, October 5, 2010 (Newswire.com) - PHOENIX (October 5, 2010) - EcoAid and Cortez Coffee announced they are completing a carbon product footprint that assesses the entire life cycle from cradle to cup on one blend of Cortez's gourmet coffees. The emissions of this particular coffee are then voided with carbon offsets and stamped with a carbon neutral label next to his More-Than-Fair trade label. Ron Cortez, president of Cortez Coffee Company, also made his Tempe headquarters carbon neutral to add another environmental level to his commitment to sustainability.
"It's refreshing to see passion in an industry that is just starting to understand the benefits of these complex environmental studies," said Dr. Ken Pollock, chief executive officer of EcoAid. "Cortez sets the stage for more efficient processes as well as brings transparency to the coffee trade."
EcoAid analyzed the greenhouse gas emissions of what it takes to produce a coffee bean on the farm, transport it to Tempe, Arizona, roast and package it locally and distribute it to the consumer's cup. The smallest percentage of the carbon footprint is from growing the coffee beans. Carbon product footprint is an extensive lifecycle analysis that tracks and records a product from beginning to end and measures its full climate impact. This study creates awareness and demonstrates the environmental impact of an everyday product.
"EcoAid makes the carbon footprint process so easy and shows us where we can make a difference in our operations and in the ecosystem," said Cortez. "Coffee is a product of our environment and we have to take care of it."
Cortez grew up in Costa Rica and is a third generation in the coffee trade. As a kid, he handpicked coffee beans in the fields which is where he gained respect for the environment and the coffee industry. Cortez demonstrates his commitment to sustainability everyday when he purchases many of his products locally, makes deliveries with his Toyota Prius, reuses boxes for shipping and fosters his More-Than-Fair trade organization. He founded More-Than-Fair to allow direct contact between farmers, roasters, and retailers without the need of a third party to testify on their behalf.
