Manor Auctions February 2011: Fine Art Catalog Auction: Lot 73048:
OWEN J GROMME - OIL ON CANVAS OF WILD TURKEYS Very well executed oil on canvas, signed lower right "O. J. GROMME. 43". An early Gromme study of turkeys. Owen Gromme (1896 - 1991).

Owen J. Gromme was born in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin on July 5, 1896. He grew up an outdoorsman, hunting and fishing. Gromme took great interest in wildlife and birds in particular. Many of his works, such as this oil painting, reflect his great interest in birds. Gromme was known to paint to scale, often utilizing a magnifying glass to ensure he was able to capture every last detail.

Gromme spent his 43 year working career with the Milwaukee Public Museum, before he chose to retire from his post of Curator of Birds and Mammals in January 1965. While with the museum, Gromme traveled extensively in order to do research and gather material for his large museum diorama displays. He was known to sketch out and draw the displays on paper before constructing them. It was these very sketches which sparked Gromme's painting career.

Along with the Gromme painting, Manor will sell 150 other Fine Art pieces including: A. Mitchell, Pissarro, Dali, Miro and many Florida Highwaymen pieces.
