Pet Owners Get a Tax Break.

New amendment allows pet care and pet products to be included in tax deductions beginning Dec. 2009.

Washington, DC. (September 11th, 2009) - On Monday, July 31st, the Congress of Thomas passed a tax deduction bill to include pet care expenses and certain pet care products, excluding training and tracking dog products.

"In the case of an individual, there shall be allowed as a deduction for the taxable year..," states Section 224 of the HR 3501 bill, "...an amount equal to the qualified pet care expenses of the taxpayer during the taxable year for any qualified pet of the taxpayer."

Up to $3500 in deductions can be made to any expenses used for a legally owned, domesticated animal to improve its life. This can include high-quality pet products such as dog beds, dog steps or elevated dog bowls. However, high-tech products like dog training collars, Garmin tracking collars, shock collars or dog training equipment are not included in the tax deduction package.

The HAPPY Act amendment comes into affect December 31, 2009 to apply to the taxable year.

The House of Representatives unanimously passed the bill after hearing supporting arguments stating 63 percent of American families own a pet, and pets are proven to increase thier pet owner's positive mental well-being.
