Petco and Purina Pro Plan Host National Pet Adoption Weekend Following Westminster Kennel Club's 136th Annual Dog Show

Online, February 16, 2012 (Newswire.com) - WHAT: Purina® Pro Plan®, official pet food sponsor of the 2012 Westminster Dog Show, believes there's a champion in every dog, which is why they are proud to rally behind pet adoption by sponsoring Petco's™ National Adoption Weekend. Petco is partnering with Purina Pro Plan to encourage potential pet parents to Think Adoption First and consider the adoption of a homeless animal rather than purchasing a pet. The Humane Society of the United States estimates that animal shelters care for 6-8 million dogs and cats every year of whom approximately 3-4 million are euthanized. To help prevent the senseless euthanization of shelter animals, every Petco store will host pet adoption events the weekend of February 18, 2012, the weekend after the Westminster Dog Show, to provide animal lovers across the nation with the chance to meet many adoptable pets. Guests can also learn about their local animal adoption groups and inquire about the best ways to care for a new pet.

Purina Pro Plan is sponsoring the weekend by offering new pet parents fifty percent off one bag of any variety of Pro Plan brand dry dog or dry cat food (up to 6lbs) through February 19, 2012. Adopters can also learn about Petco's Think Adoption First Care and Savings program, which provides all pet parents who adopt additional savings on food and supplies for their new pet.
