Online, March 15, 2010 (Newswire.com) - MONROE NH - Pete and Gerry's Eggs is introducing a new brand of premium pastel blue eggs. Called Platine Bleue, the eggs are laid by cage-free Ameraucana hens.
Platine Bleue eggs have deep yellow yolks and very rich flavor. The hens are fed a healthy diet of whole cereal grains, marigold and alfalfa grasses. The feed contain no by-products, hormones or antibiotics.
Blue eggs have been produced in South America by the indigenous Mapuche people since the mid-sixteenth century. The Mapuche bred their Araucana chickens to range free and withstand the harsh environment of Patagonia.
Pete and Gerry's Ameraucana hens are derived from those chickens and now considered a distinct breed. They're handsome birds with slate-blue colored legs and colorful plumage; and they lay the same distinctive blue eggs. They're also well suited for cage-free farming without antibiotics.
Heirloom breeds preserve both genetic diversity and family farms.
Heirloom chicken breeds are those raised by farmers before the rise of industrialized agriculture. Their unique genes can be used to build desirable traits in current breeds.
Ameraucana hens are ideally suited for family farming in New England. Their hearty nature and prized eggs allow them to be efficiently raised on small family farms.
The preservation of family farms is important for many reasons. In addition to providing safe nutritious foods, family farms are responsible land stewards. They live on their land and preserve the surrounding environment for future generations.
Family farms also play a vital role in rural economies. They provide jobs in their communities and help support local businesses. They preserve green space and an essential connection between consumers and the food supply.
Pete and Gerry's plan is to have their Platine Bleue eggs raised on small New England farms. They're recruiting family farmers as suppliers and will provide guidance and a stable market for their eggs.
Platine Bleue cage-free eggs are currently in select retail outlets like Whole Foods and independent markets.
