Phakamani Foundation Selected as Finalist for South Africa's NGO of the Year
Phakamani Foundation for micro-enterprise development has been selected as a finalist in the South African NGO of the Year category for the 2012 Oliver Empowerment Awards. The Awards are South Africa's foremost Black Economic Empowerment awards.
Online, April 22, 2012 (Newswire.com) - Phakamani Foundation has been selected as a finalist in the South African NGO of the Year category for the 2012 Oliver Empowerment Awards. The Awards are South Africa's foremost Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) awards initiative, hosted by Topco Media's annual empowerment publication Impumelelo, which documents BEE success stories.
"It is a real honour for Phakamani to be recognised in this way when we have been in operation for only four years," said Mark Tucker, CEO and Co-founder of Phakamani. "We are succeeding in helping South Africa's poorest people to build sustainable livelihoods through self-employment and micro-enterprise."
Phakamani helps impoverished women entrepreneurs improve their own lives by supporting their micro-enterprise endeavours. The foundation follows the internationally renowned Grameen model, providing training, micro-enterprise loans (no collateral required), and a group support system that helps ensure success.
According to Tucker, "There are not enough jobs in South Africa and access to commercial credit for poor entrepreneurs is restricted. The goal of Phakamani's program is to increase the income, savings, and basic living conditions of poor families, while fostering and enabling an entrepreneurial spirit in our rural communities."
The Oliver Empowerment Awards are aimed at acknowledging and celebrating the efforts made by local companies towards the development of BEE and transformation. Winners will be announced on Thursday, the 3rd of May, at the Emperors Palace in Johannesburg.
