Physicians for Informed Consent Releases New Collection of Educational Documents; States ‘MMR Vaccine Has Not Been Proven Safer Than Measles, Mumps and Rubella’

New measles data help better compare disease risks to vaccine risks

Physicians for Informed Consent (PIC) has introduced a new collection of educational documents to assist physicians, policymakers and the public in comparing the risks of measles, mumps and rubella to the risks of the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine. The documents provide important data from sources such as the National Center for Health Statistics and add to the organization's growing list of infectious disease and vaccine resources.

The collection includes a Disease Information Statement for measles, mumps and rubella, in addition to a Vaccine Risk Statement for the MMR vaccine.

"The Measles DIS was our first back in 2017 and it highlighted a prevaccine measles mortality rate of 1 in 1000 reported cases and 1 in 10,000 total cases (reported and unreported cases)," said Dr. Shira Miller, founder and president of Physicians for Informed Consent. "Now, we have included new data which shows that the measles prevaccine mortality rate was about 1 in 90,000 total cases, in children who did not have a vitamin A deficiency."

Key facts from the documents include the following:

1. Most measles, mumps and rubella cases are benign.

2. Before the mass vaccination program was introduced, fatality and permanent disability from measles, mumps and rubella were rare in the United States.

  • 1 in 93,000 or 0.001% of measles cases with normal levels of vitamin A resulted in permanent disability or death

  • 1 in 66,000 or 0.002% of mumps cases were fatal or resulted in permanent disability

  • 1 in 210,000 or 0.0005% of rubella cases contracted after birth were fatal

3. Immunity from the MMR vaccine wanes over time. Amongst vaccinated children:

  • About 60% are susceptible to infection and spread of measles by age 15

  • About 50% are susceptible to infection and spread of mumps within 19 years

  • More than 30% are susceptible to infection and spread of rubella within 15 years

4. Safety studies of the MMR vaccine are lacking in statistical power. A review of more than 60 MMR vaccine studies conducted for the Cochrane Library states, "The design and reporting of safety outcomes in MMR vaccine studies, both pre-and post-marketing, are largely inadequate."

5. The Institute of Medicine (IOM), now National Academy of Medicine (NAM), has not ruled out the possibility that MMR vaccination can lead to neurological disorders (e.g., encephalopathy, meningitis, ataxia, transverse myelitis, optic neuritis, multiple sclerosis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, brachial neuritis, and hearing loss), autoimmune diseases (e.g., chronic arthritis), fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue syndrome.

6. Seizures from the MMR vaccine occur in about 1 in 640 children, which is about five times more than seizures from measles infection.

7. The MMR vaccine has not been proven safer than measles, mumps and rubella.
