Planning Underway for Tennessee's Human Rights Day Celebration

The planning for Tennessee's Human Rights Day celebration has begun.

A committee composed of the Tennessee Human Rights Commission, Metro Human Relations Commission, Church of Scientology, My Global Voice, the United Nations Association and the Tennessee AFL-CIO Labor Council has begun meeting bi-weekly in preparation for the activities set for December 7th from 4:30-6pm this year.

"We are excited about the speakers we are bringing in and the candidates for this year's Human Rights Advocate awards," says Rev. Brian Fesler, co-chair of the planning committee. This year the committee is putting a greater emphasis on future human rights leaders, featuring art from area high school students in the program and initiating the "Rising Advocate" award for individuals new to human rights work who show great promise.

The committee welcomes any organization involved in human rights work to participate in the planning or to have a booth at the event. For more information, visit www.nashvillehumanrights.org.

Tennessee's Human Rights Day celebration is being organized by the Human Rights Day Committee, co-chaired by Shirley Sims-Saldana and Rev. Brian Fesler. This is a committee of dedicated human rights advocates who wish to educate the community at large about their rights, thereby creating a world with more peace and tolerance for all people. Any organization involved in human rights matters and willing to work is welcome and encouraged to join the Organizing Committee. Contact one of the co-chairs for more information: [email protected].

International Human Rights Day occurs every year to commemorate the ratification of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations on Dec 10, 1948. In Tennessee, Human Rights Day has become a day to reflect and look at lessons learned and battles won, while various human rights groups join forces and commit to creating an even better future.

The planning committee for Human Rights Day has begun its work for this year's event, and welcomes help and input from representatives of any organization working to forward some part of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
