Pop VoIP and Other Telephone Service Providers Pick Up Where AT&T Is Leaving Off

Pop VoIP, a leader among telecommunications companies, can help compensate for the new data caps AT&T is imposing.

Earlier this month, AT&T announced a series of changes to its DSL terms of service, most notably a data cap of 150GB per month. This is most likely in response to the profit losses AT&T has suffered at the hands of VoIP telephone service providers like Pop VoIP. Though AT&T representatives claim the cap will affect only a small percentage of users, many have cried out against the changes.

"This is exactly the sort of measure we at Pop VoIP try to avoid. We believe we have a good grasp on what our customers want, and it doesn't include limiting what they're able to do with our services," said Levi Halberstam, CEO of Pop VoIP.

AT&T has since provided an explanation for the cap, attributing it to a sudden influx of sent and received data over broadband networks. The company further claimed that the increase has been caused by a small number of customers, noting that just one high-traffic user can use as much data as nearly 20 average-traffic households. This uneven usage pattern can create network congestion, in turn causing sluggish internet speeds for other customers.

People are skeptical, though, especially because AT&T hasn't given any specific figures on the frequency of this phenomenon.

Pop VoIP and its peers, meanwhile, are more than happy to pick up the slack AT&T is creating, as this new measure may effect small businesses - which are likely to use more data than residences - in particular. Pop VoIP works primarily with small businesses, so VoIP telephone provider has an excellent idea of the needs of a company with a smaller amount of employees.

"The majority of our clients don't exceed 50 employees, and as our company has grown we've become attuned to the sort of data needs common to businesses of that size. We also understand small companies' potential to grow, offering flexible plans to accommodate staff additions, new branches and any other changes that may occur," said Halberstam.

Among the services Pop VoIP offers its clients are business toll free number functionality, long distance phone service, and all of the conveniences of a hosted phone system - maintained off-site at the Pop VoIP headquarters. Because Pop VoIP caters to small companies, the provider's customer support center is able to narrow down the sort of issues clients may have, thereby allowing the staff more time to devote to each company.
