This month is "Diabetes Awareness Month," an ideal time to alert Pacific Northwesterners about the benefits of teaching young children how to prepare and eat healthy meals. Shane will present his talk "You Are a Rockstar in Your Kitchen" to parents at Starbucks Corporation auditorium this Thursday, November 10 at 11:30 AM. Media are welcome to attend.

 Childhood obesity has tripled since the 1970's

 Today, one-in-six children under the age of six is overweight or obese

 Researchers predict that at this rate, 1/3 of children born after 2000 will eventually develop Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, or even cancer.

Shane Valentine, author of The Baby Cuisine Cookbook, chef/instructor for Whole Foods Markets, father, food activist, and founder of the Pre-school Food Revolution will be visiting Seattle to tour local preschools and cook with parents at Starbucks Corp. Shane is available to discuss:

 The importance of early intervention in teaching children and families to eat healthy

 The family meal: how to cook with small children

 The rising childhood obesity epidemic: its connection to processed food companies and deceptive marketing tactics

 How Seattle preschool's are incorporating healthy cooking classes into their curriculums

Diabetes impacts over 26 million people-more than eight percent of the population-and many more are at risk, including one-third of America's youth. For young families, early-onset, obesity-related illnesses such as Type-2 diabetes can be devastating both emotionally and economically. Many researchers and groups focus on the cause of obesity, but very few address ways parents can take action and PREVENT it! By underscoring the importance of cooking and eating together, Shane helps every family do their part in ensuring the health of the entire family for generations to come.
