PreMedLife Magazine Ranks "Best of the Best" Primary-Care Medical Schools
PreMedLife magazine combines data from two key reports to help rank the "real" top schools in primary-care medicine.
Online, December 9, 2010 (Newswire.com) - PreMedLife magazine has released its picks for the "Best of the Best" US medical schools for primary-care medicine.
Taking the top spot on the list was the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine which not only ranked as one of the U.S. News & World Report's top 10 schools for primary-care medicine, but also received one of the highest "social mission" scores. The following is a list of the school rankings:
1. The University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine
2. Michigan State University College of Human Medicine
3. East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine
4. Morehouse School of Medicine
5. The University of Kansas School of Medicine
There were also some schools which received honorable mentions for their continuing efforts to encourage their students to pursue careers in primary-care medicine.
"Unless more primary-care physicians are recruited, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) estimates a shortage of 30,000 doctors by 2015, and in 10 years, this shortage could go up to 150,000," revealed Atul Grover, MD, chief advocacy officer for the AAMC. And in light of the nation's scarce number of primary-care physicians, PreMedLife magazine wanted to acknowledge the educational institutions that are working hard to reverse this reality.
PreMedLife's rankings are based on data from two sources: The 2010 U.S. News & World Report's list of best medical schools for primary-care medicine and the Annals of Internal Medicine's ranking of medical schools that graduate the most primary-care physicians.
