Preparing for Summer: Garages, Grills and Green Spaces

Household design guru and designer for HGTV's "$100 Makeover", Leslie Segrete, endorses Nutek, a green prouducts manufacturer.

With spring in full swing, we are all looking forward to the official kick off of summer, Memorial Day Weekend! Even though summer officially starts in June, we all mark this holiday weekend as the indication of what the summer is going to hold for us all. Every weekend leading up the celebration is going to be super-busy getting our homes and yards into tip-top shape for the big event. You are, no doubt, about to get very busy mowing the lawn, trimming up the landscaping, cleaning the exterior of your home and getting your grill ready for her first appearance of the season. With so much to do, it is hard to know exactly where to start. So, just take it one project at a time and with a bit of hard work you will be barbequing in the yard of your dreams.

A Mower's Paradise

The best way to start getting your backyard oasis in shape is to give your lawn a good mowing and to do that your mower needs to be in proper operating order. If this is going to be your first trim of the season, take a moment now to check out your lawn mower and make sure it is good to go. First, you need to change the oil; even you don't think you need it, you should start with fresh oil every season.

Next, change out the spark plug for new one, so you are starting the season fresh. Then, clean or replace the air filter. If your mower has a paper-style filter, simply blow out the debris with an air hose. If the filter is foam you can wash it with a mild detergent then rinse and allow to dry. Once it is dry you can lubricate the filter with a few drops of oil; try Nutek's Multi-Purpose lubricant, LubFix®. Fill the tank with fresh fuel and remember to add fuel extender so the gas doesn't go bad before you've used it all, particularly if you have a smaller lawn. Finally, sharpen the blades and you are in business.

If you see any rust on the blades, you can easily remove it before sharpening with Nutek's Simply Soy® wipes, which get the rust right off, and then you can sharpen as usual. After the sharpening, you can add another quick coating of Nutek's LubFix® to prevent rust from forming on the blades as you use the mower. Remember to mow the lawn earlier in the day rather than later and not to cut the grass too short. Approximately two inches will do for most types of lawns, and try to mow the lawn every one to two weeks. After all of the maintenance is done on my mower, I like to give my hands a quick wipe with Nutek's Gas Off™, the only product that removes fuel smells from hands.

A Beautiful Exterior

If the winter season has left your home looking a bit more dingy than you'd like, a nice fresh exterior is just a good cleaning away. Fortunately, Nutek's Grime Off™ wipes remove mildew, mold and stains from vinyl siding without damaging your investment. For other materials, consider using a power washer on a low setting. Spend time cleaning your windows, even the shutters and screens.

Barbeque Heaven

Let's not forget the star of our show; your barbeque. Even she needs a little work at the beginning of the season to ensure a summer's worth of tasty barbeque treats. Before you fire up the grill for the first time, take these simple steps to make sure it is ready to cook. For the exterior of the grill remove any rust using a wire brush and my trusty Grill Wipes, provided by Nutek. This new product is made from soy products grown in the United States and featuring a heavy-duty, 100% biodegradable towelette, and debuted at the National Hardware Show in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 5th.

For the grates, I remove the grate and use my wire brush to remove large debris left behind from my last grilling. Making sure the grates are completely cool, I give them a good cleaning with Nutek's Grill Wipes; these heavy-duty wipes will get off all of the build up and charred remains from the grill. These wipes work well on both metal and porcelain grills, making them a must-have for any serious barbeque chef or backyard enthusiast.

Clean the exterior of your grill with Nutek's Grime Off™ wipes, including the housing and lid. Make sure all of your hoses on your gas grill are in good shape, check for gas leaks by coating the hoses with dish soap. If you see any bubbles, you have a leak and you need to replace the hose before any outdoor dining can occur. Remember to keep your grill at least three feet away from your home or any structure and cover your grill when you aren't using it to keep it ready for next grilling adventure.
