President-elect of Medical Society of Virginia to speak at
inaugural Physician Practice Survival Conference

The Physician Practice Survival Conference announces the addition of Russell C. Libby, M.D., F.A.A.P., president-elect of the Medical Society of Virginia, to the slate of speakers for its inaugural gathering, September 14-15, in Alexandria, VA. Dr. Libby will be joined by Ronald C. Sroka, M.D., former president of the Maryland State Medical Society, in a session titled, "A Call to Action for Independent Physicians and Small Group Practitioners." In a separate session, Dr. Libby will discuss "Adopting Change and Developing Small and Large Group Physician Alignment."

The two-day Physician Practice Survival Conference will bring together some of the most respected leaders in healthcare, from practicing physicians to industry executives to third-party solution providers, to examine the economic challenges that threaten the survival of independent physician practices. A full roster of healthcare thought leaders will also discuss the business models that can answer these challenges and produce long-term economic stability for physicians who wish to remain independent.

"For every change in healthcare right now that seems scary or daunting, there's an opportunity for us to improve care and streamline paperwork and bureaucracy," Dr. Libby says. "That's what this conference is about-bringing together the people who actually know what it's like to face these economic, clinical and practical challenges every day so we can come up with solutions that make sense for us. If we sit back and let government and insurance companies do all the work for us, we probably won't be very happy with the results."

Dr. Libby is founder and president of Virginia Pediatric Group, Ltd., a primary care pediatric practice with three offices in northern Virginia, and co-founder, VP, and medical director of American Pediatric Consultants, Inc., a pediatric specialty home care service. He is also president of HealthConnect IPA, a primary care Independent Practice Association. He is chief of general pediatrics at Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children and a member of the hospital's leadership committee. Dr. Libby is active in organized medicine and serves in positions of leadership at the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The conference speaker line-up includes many more noteworthy physicians, including Kevin Fickenscher, M.D., President and CEO of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA); Kerry Willis, M.D., chief physician strategist of ACO Subgroup Leadership at Proactive HealthCare USA; and Michael Parkinson, M.D., senior medical director, Health and Productivity, UPMC Health Plan and Work Partners and former president of the American College of Preventive Medicine.
