Professor Timothy Hoff, Leader in Public Health Higher Education, Joins the D'Amore-McKim School of Business

Leader in Public Health Higher Education Joins Northeastern's D'Amore-McKim School of Business

Dr. Timothy Hoff has joined Northeastern University's D'Amore-McKim School of Business faculty in the Management and Organizational Development group. As Associate Professor of Management, Healthcare Systems, and Health Policy, Dr. Hoff will teach a variety of health policy and management courses.

Professor Hoff's primary research interests are in the area of health policy and management. Specifically, he studies health care implementation; physician attitudes and behavior; the organizational and cultural aspects of health care quality and patient safety; changing modes of professionalism; and health care innovation.

A recognized expert in health policy and management issues, Professor Hoff's article, "Embracing a Diversified Future for US Primary Care" was published in the January 2012 issue of The American Journal of Managed Care. In 2012, Hoff was named as one of the "101 Most Influential Professors of Public Health" nationally by MPHProgramsList.com, an online service for public health student education.

Recently, Dr. Hoff participated in an invitational meeting conducted by Academy Health, a U.S. organization for health policy research, with support from the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. The goal of the meeting was to educate industry and governmental leadership on how well current and emerging value-focused initiatives appear to be working, and where future research should be directed. Dr. Hoff presented jointly with Dr. Gary Young, Director of the Northeastern University Center for Health Policy and Healthcare Research and Professor of Strategic Management and Healthcare Systems, on the issue of physician responses to strategies aimed at improving value such as pay-for-performance, accountable care organizations, and patient-centered medical homes.

"We are delighted to welcome Professor Hoff to the faculty," said Dr. Hugh Courtney, dean of the D'Amore-McKim School of Business. "Professor Hoff's research and experience will be critical in informing our students' understanding of the evolving healthcare landscape and the business of health management."

Professor Hoff serves in a variety of advisory capacities to federal health agencies and health care organizations, and is a member of the Academy of Management, Academy Health, and American Sociological Association. He is the author of "Practice Under Pressure: Primary Care Physicians and Their Medicine in the Twenty-First Century," lauded as a "hallmark in the field" and listed as an Outstanding Academic Title by Choice: Current Reviews for Academic Libraries. Professor Hoff earned his BS and his PhD in Public Administration and Policy at University at Albany, SUNY.

Prior to joining the D'Amore-McKim faculty, Professor Hoff served as an Associate Professor of Health Policy and Management at the University at Albany, State University of New York School of Public Health. Previous to academia, he worked in hospital administration and health care consulting.
