Proper Diet Can Help Slow Onset of Alzheimer's Disease, Researchers Say
Vitamins B6, B12 combined with folic acid figure prominently in slowing gray matter atrophy.
Online, July 9, 2013 (Newswire.com) - A recent study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences has shown that vitamins B6 and B12 combined with folic acid slowed the atrophy of gray matter of the brain affected by Alzheimer's disease.
Researchers examined people over age 70 who had mild memory loss and high levels of homocysteine, an amino acid linked to shrinkage of the brain in conditions like Alzheimer's. Among those with elevated homocysteine, they found that the amount of gray matter declined 5.2 percent in those taking a placebo, compared with 0.6 percent in those who took a vitamin cocktail consisting of vitamins B6, B12 and folic acid.
