PROPERTY: Avoid Post-purchase Problems
Online, September 12, 2012 (Newswire.com) - Buying a home is stressful, but the real problems may arise after the purchase
New research has revealed that the majority of Australian homebuyers discover problems with their home after moving in.
A survey undertaken by Lonergan Research in mid-July identified that the average Australian invested seven months into the search for a new home. It was also revealed that they inspect 12 properties and perform 90 hours of research, on average, before making a decision. Despite the time and capital committed to buying property, 55% of Australians discovered problems with their newly purchased home after settling in.
"Home buying time is stressful and with so many properties to inspect problems can go overlooked. Unless, the house purchased is brand new there is likely to be deterioration," said Pia Vogel, Joint Managing Director of HomeSource.
More than one in four (28%) of the problems discovered after moving in, were plumbing related. However, only 32% of Australians get their plumbing checked prior to purchase.
"It tends to be the unseen areas that get overlooked, like the plumbing. Checking the state of the pipes is very important. Having a pipe burst can potentially cause severe damage to the entire home if it is not dealt with quickly."
"Even if proper precautions are taken emergencies still occur so it is good to be covered. Home emergency cover is a popular option in Europe and the United States and is available in Australia as Home Assist, the first of its kind on our market." said Ms Vogel.
Home Assist provides 24/7 assistance for plumbing, gas, electrical and locksmith emergencies. Members call the one phone number and a tradesperson is organised on their behalf within two hours. The operator also talks the member through steps to subdue the emergency over the phone in order to avoid further damage.
"Getting a problem solved right away can be the difference between a mishap and a disaster. Also, home buyers often have moved to completely new neighbourhoods and will not have a local 'go-to' tradesperson to call. Home Assist means jobs get done quickly and makes the stress of finding a tradesperson a thing of the past." said Ms Vogel.
